Multimedia 4 Project – Rodenbach
In the second semester of the second year each student was asked to make a interactive flash application based on video. This assignment had to be done in teams of 2 and finished before the examinations in June.
First steps toward finishing this project in a successfully mater we had to pick a cultural or tourism area to base the site on. Here for we’ve taken a map of the area and looked which subjects were geographical most interesting between me and mine partner Wannes Wittevrongel’s place. He lived in Bruges and I near Ypres, so we picked something that was between those two location and also easily accessed from our school in Kortrijk. Then it was that we stumbled upon Roeselare who had a very interesting and historical brewery not far from the train station. This is how Rodenbach became or primary subject for our flash video site.
Now we had a subject, we still needed green light from or teachers and the company itself. Which we got without any trouble. The teacher found it a fun and interesting subject but there was a second group who also had Rodenbach in mind. The people from Rodenbach were also very cooperative, with only some restriction, that we didn’t disturb the tour groups and weren’t granted access to the brewery itself because of hygienic reasons.
Next steps of the process were brainstorming session, writing the script, story board, designing the look and feel for the project and after all the preparations the filming itself.
The scenario we came up with was that the main brewer was poisoned by a bad vessel. The only cure is a perfectly brewed Rodenbach. Your job was to find all the main ingredients and brew the Rodenbach yourself with help from the brewer his sidekick (played by Wannes). If you picked the wrong ingredients the beer turned a green like colour and you had to start all over again.
Because of our filled days with lessons and the dates given by Rodenbach we only had one day to film everything on 2 different locations. We didn’t found any actors so beside filming it all we also had to play the actors in the video. Wannes played the main role, where I played a sub character and the voice overs. Just before the examinations we still had to programme the entire flash and the video still had to edited weeks before the deadline. The big time problems where caused due to the other projects we had running during the year. A Network based multiplayer Poker game made in Java, our CCNA exames were only the tip of our work.
There for we split the workload in 2 parts. The programming in Flash (Wannes his part) and the editing of the video in Premiere Pro CS3(my part). At the deadline the video was 99% completed only some voice over which we couldn’t record because Wannes his microphone was broken were implented with poor sound quality. The Flash was a other story, we overlooked it and was way more work than we expected. Our dream scenario was that between every scene there was a mini game to get the ingredients and a end game to brew the beer itself. None of these games were completed and there for we had to cut some scenes and functions like a basket, were all the already collected ingredients were displayed.
I shall no longer bore you with my blater and just give the URL. It was originally designed as local flash application and not for the internet so there isn’t a preloader. If it goes much to slow you can also download the program in a RAR file.
BTW I’m not specializing in Multimedia so this isn’t the best one of the school even not from my class. In my eye’s its even not completly finished. But please let me know what you think of it in the comments.
